Edgar Allan Poe Progress!

We're getting somewhere! This is about 7 hours of sculpting. (...and a terrible snapshot!)

Paula, Your Edgar Allen Poe is looking great so far! Quick question. I am thinking of making the cross-over to polymer clay from plasticine/ I've have tried Sculpy, femo, and femo soft in the past. I noticed you use Premo, and I wondered if this was your fav. and why you prefer it over the other brands? Does your preference vary depending on your piece?
thanks :)

hey thanks, Suzanne!

I've never tried plasticine.... I always thought that was a general term for all of these polymer clay brands!

I've used FIMO and FIMO Soft in the past, and dislike them both. Way too hard/crumbly for the kind of work I do. (I think they're best for canes, though?) I don't like to knead clay very much, so the FIMOs are out!

I love SculpeyIII, but love Premo even more. I generally buy both of these two and use them together. When they're on sale, I lean to buying more Premo, as the only reason I don't buy it exclusively is the higher price. Premo's colors won't dye your hands as much as SculpeyIII's, and it is a more durable clay when baked. If I were making pieces that needed to stand on their own or be worn as jewelry, I'd use Premo. Also, if you're making something that's say, black and white together, Premo won't cause the white to look ruddy and the black to look grey.

I never got a chance to use StudioSculpey (which seemed to have awesome color choices) and now my craft store is carrying them less and less. ???

Hope that helps! :~D

PS: I also love something called Sculpey Ultra Light. Super soft, lightweight, and almost powdery.... amazing for armatures or thin/delicate pieces.

Paula,
Thanks so much for the great detailed info- very helpful!

I switched to plasticine because I felt like I had to fight with the Femo to get it to blend the way I wanted, but now that there are many more options and more artist-friendly brands and colours available I really want to try it again.

I like that you can harden polymer clay. I am always so worried that my plasticine illos will get smooshed by little fingers since it never hardens.

The 2 art supply store I use don't carry Premo. Do you have a supply store that carries all of yor brands or do you have any online suppliers you could recommend?

Thanks again;)

Hmmmmm, yes my craft store seems to carry them all!

You might want to look around at this website:

....anything you could possibly want to know about polymer clay!

Also, check out the community chat forums on Etsy.com for more info on people's preferences, techniques, and inside scoops on where to buy online. They're pretty helpful over there! :~)
